Music!

Yesterday I was privileged to play virtual DJ for a Xmas party on Twitter. I had brilliant fun taking people’s requests and playing all the hits from Christmas yesteryear, Christmas Number 1s and floor fillers.
This got me thinking about music and what an important part in plays in our lives. Can you imagine going to a party that doesn’t play music? Do you drive without the radio or a CD playing in the car?
I listen to music more or less all the time. I love it. I also love singing although as my regular readers now know I sound like Cilla Black so not everybody appreciates me singing. Last week’s Friday Fun Blog was an 80s pop quiz and this week’s Friday Fun blog is going to be a Christmas hits pop quiz. Again, because last week was so successful, all entries will get 10% off their next purchase at www.lifesacelebration.co.uk
As such, included in most of my party boxes is music. The one thing that everybody, without exception, comments on about my milestone parties is that they contain music of different eras and a quiz of the music of the time. This is certainly what goes down well at these parties.
Even from the start of your life, music plays a part in our lives and as such I include a nursery rhyme CD in my Baby Shower party boxes.
So I think we should all keep singing and dancing to music and I think I will start us off with a classic that we can all enjoy. All together now……..Young Man there’s no need to feel down. I said Young Man………………………..
Keep singing my friends

What’s your Party Piece?

I love parties! I can’t tell a lie I love everything about them! So you might say I have the perfect business for me!
I think my love of parties shows in the feedback I get from my party boxes. Yesterday’s customer feedback said “Party box has arrived, and it’s fab!  Thank you so much.” This particular feedback was for something a bit different from my regular products and was a gothic party. I had an absolutely wonderful time thinking up party games and sourcing party supplies for this product. So if you want a gothic party or something a bit different just get in touch and I will put something together for you.
Anyway I digress! Today somebody asked me what my strengths were (we were talking about it from a business point of view) and I said “I do a mean Cilla Black singing impersonation”. This is actually true! In fact when I was a  child I did like to stand up and entertain others with this and other impressions of people.
This got me thinking about what people have as their ‘party pieces’? I would love to know what people have as their own special talents (keep it clean guys!) that would entertain at a party. I’m sure there are lots of talented people out there who can say something much better than singing like Cilla Black and Tina Turner.
Anyway I’ll sign off for now. But tonight Matthew I’m going to be…………………………….Surprise Surprise!!

Friday Fun - How to make your own piƱata

It’s quite a long blog today but with the party season arriving why not make a fantastic piƱata with the kids. If you don’t know what a piƱata is, it’s a colourful papier mache shape filled with goodies that you hit with a big stick. Blindfolded! We've not made this one in our house yet but we will! Let me know how yours turn out.

You must allow a few days for this process so if you do want to have a go for a party make sure you make well in advance.

1)      Blow up a big balloon,

2)      Tear up newspapers into thin strips (about 3 cms x 12 cms). Put into an old turkey basting tray with a PVA glue mix (mix one part glue to two parts water),

3)      Paste the strips one by one onto the balloon using a brush,

4)      Smooth the strips onto the balloon. Make sure you put lots of layers on as the more layers there are the sturdier it will be (although it will take longer to dry). Leave a hole about the size of a 5 pence piece for balloon popping purposes. Make sure you also leave a hole big enough for inserting sweets but not so big that they might fall out. You are probably better to make this hole in the side of the piƱata.

5)      Use white paper for the outer layer as it will make the piƱata easier to decorate.

6)      Leave the balloon to dry overnight. This might even take a couple of nights depending on how many layers you have.

7)      When it’s all dry take a pin and prick the balloon. Remove the deflated balloon from the hardened paper shell.

8)      Use the hole that you used for pricking the balloon to put string through to hang the piƱata up.

9)      Paint, decorate with crepe paper, glitter, streamers or anything you want.

10)   Fill with lots of sweets and then enjoy the fun.
We would love to see your pictures of your piƱatas.

Don’t forget that Life’s A Celebration can provide you with everything you need for a fantastic party. Our party boxes are filled with all the party ideas you need and all the party supplies you want. Always happy to help – just get in touch.

Steep learning curves

Just a short blog today as I am incredibly busy packing Party Boxes and getting myself organised for Christmas (those present won’t wrap themselves).

Somebody asked me yesterday “Would you believe this time last year that you would be doing this?” and my answer is a definite no. This time last year I was neatly ensconced in my role in the Civil Service and looking forward to Christmas. This year I am a self employed on line retailer (but still looking forward to Christmas). It’s amazing that in one year I have begun to climb a very steep learning curve on being an online retailer. This time last year phrases such as SEO, Twitter, Mail Chimp, online marketing, blogging, domain authority would have been a foreign language to me.
Now I would like to make it quite clear that I am by no means an expert on any of these things but in comparison to last year I am a Grand Master! I’m always happy to pass on my limited knowledge so if you want to pick my brains then please feel free to get in touch.

I love having my own business and things are going really well (touch wood). I have shipped my Party Boxes all over the UK and Ireland and the feedback I am getting is amazing. If you have any kind of celebration coming up then please get in touch and if I can help then I certainly will.

Keep smiling my friends.

Friday Fun - Foraging for Christmas Decorations

As Christmas has officially arrived I thought I would make my Friday Fun Blog nice and Christmassy!
So why don’t you wrap up warm and go out foraging for Christmas decorations. It’s easy to do and natural decorations look so much nicer than shop bought items and it’s a great thing for all the family to enjoy.
So every time you go on a walk or to the park don’t forget to pick up decorative bits and bobs. Pick up fir cones – these look great on their own or decorated with paint and glitter, twigs of berried shrubs (rosehips, hawthorn etc) and interestingly shaped pieces of wood and bark that can be painted or covered in glitter.
Arrange your finds in a large vase for a gorgeous table arrangement. Or fill a shallow glass bowl with fir cones, tangerines, cinnamon sticks and glass baubles.
Don’t forget to bring in plenty of holly and other evergreens like ivy or conifer.
Let me know how you get on with this and any pictures of your homemade decorations will get to feature on my blog!
All together now “Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly Fa La La La La La La La La!!”

Let the festivities begin my friends!

Being a celebrity and staying positive.

So did you see me on Sky News on Monday night?  http://www.youtube.com/user/LifesACelebration?feature=mhee If you haven’t heard about it then you must be living in Outer Mongolia because I have been telling the whole world!! Anyway if you do live in Outer Mongolia and you haven’t heard; I was part of a news article about my local area and the current economic hard times! If you have seen it then you will know that it was quite a depressing piece and painted my local area in rather a grave light (when actually it's not a bad place to live!).

Then right at the end of the piece me and my dog Daisy arrive on screen and hopefully lift a little bit of the depression out of the article.
I know things are tough out there at the moment but do you think that with a little bit of positivity we can all start to feel a bit more upbeat about the world? I don’t know about you but I’ve stopped watching the news (unless I’m on!) because it’s all so depressing and rarely focusses on the good things in life

With my business and all the party boxes I am sending out I can see first-hand that people are still celebrating all the momentous occasions in their lives and it’s really encouraging to see. It would be nice for the media to focus on the good not the bad occasionally. Do you think it’s because bad news ‘sells’?
Let’s all start to embrace a new positive way of thinking and focus on the positives not the negatives and with my new found celebrity status I’m going out there to spread the word about positivity and how together we can all help each other. Mind you I’m not going out the front door – there are so many paparazzi out there!!!
Have fab day my friends

Friday Fun - Biscuit recipe - Enjoy!

Doesn’t Friday come round quick? Anyway here we are and it’s Friday again so it’s time for Max’s Friday Fun Blog!

I thought I would give you all my recipe for delicious biscuits which if you have Christmas cookie cutters are perfect for this time of year. Great for any parties that you’re having or great for taking to any parties you might be going to.
You will need;

100g butter (cut into small pieces),
75g plain flour and 75g of self-raising flour, mixed together,

75g of caster sugar,
2 tsp vanilla essence.

1 egg yolk,

Run the butter into the flour mix until it looks like breadcrumbs, add the sugar, vanilla essence and egg yolk. Add a tablespoon of water and mix into a dough.

Chill in the fridge for about an hour.

Heat the oven to 170c and grease a couple of baking trays. Roll out the dough 1cm thick and use your cookie cutter to cut out your biscuit shapes.

If you’re going to hang them on the tree make a hole in the top for each to thread the ribbon through.

Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes. When they’re cool decorate with chocolate frosting, chocolate chips, hundreds and thousands or anything you want really!

Enjoy and I want to know how everybody’s turn out.

Speak soon my friends

Where do your party ideas come from?

I love my job. It’s as plain and simple as that. One of my very favourite jobs is thinking up party ideas. Since I started this business I have had some pretty amazing days and one of my favourite days was when I sat all day putting together the Pop Music Quizzes for our Milestone parties. For the 30th party you get 90s music and pop quiz, for the 40th you get 80s music and pop quiz, for the 50th you get the 70s and I think you’ve got it by now but for the 60th you get 60s.

I’ve always worked with numbers and believe it or not I’m an Economist by trade. I’ve always enjoyed throwing parties but if you would have told me even a year ago that I would be putting together parties for people for a living I’d have laughed in your face. It’s not the sort of thing you expect an Economist to be doing. In fact many of my dull accountant friends (let’s hope they don’t read this!) have said to me since I started the business “I don’t know where you get your ideas from” and if I’m totally honest neither do I. They’ve obviously been in my brain for 34 years just bursting to get out!
I am constantly being approached to think up new party ideas and I think this is one of the shining glories of my party boxes. There’s no getting away from the fact that there is a wealth of information on the internet on how to have a party or ideas for party games but do you honestly have the time (or the inclination!) to trawl through these sites? Also the stuff you read is nearly always the same – our Party boxes offer something different.

But I can’t judge whether my ideas are any good. I leave that to my customers. Without exception, I have always received excellentfeedback on every party I have ever sent out, so the ‘proof of the pudding’ and all that. Most people comment on the value for money and the meticulous attention to detail because of all the items that you receive in the box. That’s not just the tangible items i.e. your plates, decorations etc. but also the intangible things like the games ideas, quizzes or recipe ideas. So if you’re after a great party but without all the toing and froing then you know what to do!
Right time to go but before I do and so I don’t get any complaints; accountants are not dull…………………………………….well not all the time anyway.

Time to think about Christmas

Hello my friends,
Normally at this time of year I have my Christmas shopping finished and wrapped. This year however I haven't even started! The perils of running your own business and being a little bit busy with that!
Anyway I came across these instructions on how to make Edible Stained Glass and thought "what a good idea".
So if you want to do something different with your children and make some edible Christmas decorations here's how you do it.
1) Make edible Christmas decorations out of boiled sweets - but BE CAREFUL the molten syrup can be hot and caution needs to be exercised,
2) Pre heat your oven to 170c.
3) Take some boiled fruit sweets and some metal cookie cutters,
4) Line a baking sheet with foil and spray the surface with cooking oil and place the cookie cutters on top,
5) Pop some sweets inside the cookie cutters and put in the oven for about 6 minutes until all the sweets have melted,
6) Take out the tray and swirl the molten liquid with a cocktail stick to make the whole of the cookie cutter is filled (Make sure the Mum, Dad or a responsible adult does this because it will be very hot)
7) Let them cool a little but before they are completely cold and whilst still a bit soft put a hole in them,
8) When cool, but not cold peel the shapes from the foil, string thread or ribbon through the whole and hang them on your Christmas tree.

Your children will be able to impress friends and relatives with these edible Christmas decorations. Be careful of sharp corners though and don't forget if you have pets they might want to eat them too!

I hope you enjoy making these and I want to know how everybody's turn out.

It's Fun Friday my friends so have a great day.

Busy, busy, busy

Hi there friends,
I know it's been a while since I posted but life here at Party HQ has been mega hectic. We've launched our new website www.lifesacelebration.co.uk which features all our product range. I am beyond excited about this new website and need to tell you all about it. We have milestone parties, kids parties, baby showers, hen parties and our totally unique Wedding Activity Bags. In fact I write this post in between boxing up Milestone Birthday Parties. I've been up to my ears in decorations, badges, candles, plates and games. Yes that's right our Party Boxes contain absolutely everything you need.

As I've been packing I've been  thinking about how much my life has changed since this time last year and how much I am loving it. My party boxes are being enjoyed both in the UK and abroad (something that always makes me feel good).

I have tried to convey in the website just how friendly I am and how I will, pretty much, box up whatever party you want. If you have kids and adults coming to a party then just let me know and I'll tailor it to that or if your daughter is a crazy fan of Hello Kitty then I will put together a fabulous party box for that. Anything really! I am here to help and I am a chatty person so if you want to, get in touch I will always do what I can to help.

Anyway do you think it's worked? When you've looked at the website - drop me a line and tell me whether you think it's friendly enough! Would love to hear from you!

Well my friends that's all from me today. I've got packing to do!

So keep celebrating your life and I'll see you really soon.

With a little help from my friends

Hello my friends.
I was thinking today about people that I know and people I have met since I started this business. When I left work I thought the main thing I would miss would be the cameraderie (spelling?) and general tomfoolery! The fact is that you spend a long time with colleagues and as such, by and large, you have to get on with them. I have made some very good friends at my place of work who I know I will be friends with for the rest of my life.
Now I'm working on my own (well with my dog!) and I thought that it would be a very lonely place to be. However, as with most new businesses, I have been getting out there, raising my profile in my local networks andusing the excellent services of the support mechanisms that are in place (which have been fab btw - you know who you are!!) and I am genuinely surprised at how many lovely people I have met in such a short space of time.
Some of these I would even consider as friends!
I have some very exciting plans for my business which I am hoping to announce within the next couple of months or so and I know that all of the things that I want to put into place would not be possible without the support and friendship from some of the people I have met on this journey (I sound like I should be on a reality TV programme!).
So let's all celebrate our friends and throw them a huge party to tell them we love them. Obviously using Personalised Parties to provide you with a party in a box!
If you want to get on touch with me then please do so. I'm always happy to chat with people. Don't forget that for a lot of the day it's just me and my dog Daisy so I'm always pleased when people stop by and say hi. You can reach me on maxine@personalisedparties.co.uk You never know we might even strike up a friendship!
See you soon people

When life throws you a curveball

Well hello there my lovelies,It's Thursday night (I think - the school holidays have me totally confused as to what day it is) and my daughter is watching a Smurfs DVD so I thought I would sit down and put my thoughts down on the page.
Well I've finally finished work and despite the fact that I've known for almost a year that my job would go, when the moment actually arrives and you find yourself walking out of work for the last time, it's quite an anticlimax! So now the rest of my life beckons and that means my new business www.personalisedparties.co.uk Since the website was launched in May the response to my product has been phenomenal and I'm really proud of how far I've come in such a short space of time.
The original plan was to enter the kids party market and test the water for a year or so before moving into other directions but I've been approached by so many people wanting so many things that I have launched loads of new products already and no matter where I am I'm constantly thinking of the next (today it was the new Hen Parties in a Box which I found myself thinking about in the frozen pizza aisle in Tesco!).
So far our portfolio now consists of kids parties in a box, girls sleepovers in a box (I love these!), milestone parties (complete with Swag Bags for the guests to take home), wedding activity bags, activity bags for long journeys, pre wedding slumber parties. The new products have not been added to the website yet because I have plans in that department, which I will be revealing very soon. So if you want to find out more just pop me an email on maxine@personalisedparties.co.uk
I know it's early days and I don't want to count my chickens and all that but I feel very positive about the business and life in general.
So my advice is that when life throws you a curveball, grab it and run with it because it might just be a good thing.
Speak soon friends (pop across and say hi on Twitter @maxine_johnston or Personalised Parties on FB - I love to chat and alway happy to discuss your party needs!)

Why It's Important To Celebrate

Why is it important to celebrate? Well it's a chance to join with loved ones and have a jolly good knees up. Whether you're celebrating a birthday, an anniversary, a birth, a life or anything really, there should always be an excuse to join with family and friends, enjoy ourselves and be thankful for the things we've got. There's far too many things in life that can get you down (especially at the moment) but if we sit back and reflect, as somebody far more eloquent than I am put it, there are lots of "reasons to be cheerful".
So here I am 3 days left at work and looking out into what the future holds for me and my little girl. The business is taking off far quicker than I ever would have hoped for (for which I am cheerful) and I can genuinely say I am loving every minute of getting to know potential customers, suppliers, networks.
I am currently running a competition to win 10 free party bags. All that entrants need to do is email me with their favourite party game and tomorrow I will randomly pick a winner (by the way you can enter by emailing me - just go to www.personalisedparties.co.uk and click on the 'get in touch' page - it would again make me cheerful if you did this!). I have been completely taken aback by the volume of entrants and some of the brilliant party games that have been put forward.
There are lots of reasons to be cheerful and lots of reasons to celebrate. In fact we don't need to have a reason - lets just all be cheerful and celebrate that fact that we are!!!
See you all very soon

New beginnings and having "The Fear"

Hello my lovelies,
I have one week left before I get made redundant and have established my own business providing parties in a box that get delivered to your door. Having worked at the same place for many years I was very much enjoying a comfort zone. I knew the job, I knew the people and, probably more importantly if I'm honest,  they knew me. But now I've got "The Fear". That is, a sense of the unknown that stretches before me and that I am the maker of my own destiny (or something like that anyway!) and this fills me with complete dread.
Starting my own business has been quite a learning curve but I can honestly say I've enjoyed every minute. Don't get me wrong, there have been times when things have annoyed me or something has happened that didn't quite go to plan but knowing that ultimately you are creating your own path is really quite uplifting.
My website launched in May www.personalisedparties.co.uk and over the course of the last 6 weeks things have really started to happen. Having sampled life self employed (albeit for just a short time) I can honestly say it is the hardest work I have ever done. I rarely get to bed before 12 because I'm packing party boxes or filling activity bags or doing paperwork but I absolutely LOVE IT. There's something that feels very good about doing it for yourself.
Don't get me wrong people, deciding to take the redundancy at work was not an easy decision (especially because I have a small mouth to feed) and I still worry about the fact that I won't have that reliable cheque every month but not once have I ever thought I was making the wrong decision.
So c'mon people let's all fill our lives with "The Fear". However failing that or you don't want to, don't forget about our fabulous parties and then we can all celebrate the fear together!!
See you soon
Maxine

It's all about parties!

Last January my daughter turned 6 and when I asked what kind of party she wanted all she could say was "A Musical Statue" party. So I thought "I can do that" and organised a Musical Statues party in our local village hall. All the kids loved it but it got me thinking about how much time and effort we put into making sure our kids have fantastic parties
At the time, redundancy was looming for me and in a flash of inspiration it came to me - busy parents need an affordable service that takes all the hassle out of organising a party. And so www.personalisedparties.co.uk was born. Fast forward 7 months and we now have a fabulous website, orders coming in and the makings of a flourishing business.
I'm now 2 weeks away from being made redundant and have put together a product that I'm really proud of.
The product itself is essentially a party delivered straight to your door. In the party box are plates, cups, napkins, banners, balloons, music, games sheets with full instructions on how to play the games, fully wrapped up prizes and a separate bag of prizes to hand out for games that have no definite 'winner', a craft kit with things to make and do and party bags fully made up. The beauty of the product is that it takes all the stress away from the parent and saves all the usual traipsing around the shops and trawling the internet.
This is my first blog and I hope to follow it up with my musings on starting a business and the delights and pitfalls that I encounter. I look forward to one day having a chat with you and helping you organise a fab party. See you soon x
